Superior Products Dark Fury: Wheel-Finish Buying Guide

A wheel cleaner can be inexpensive per mixed bottle and still be the wrong purchase. With Dark Fury, three questions come first: what finish is on the wheel, what contamination remains after routine washing, and can you provide the required handling protection? This guide addresses that decision for US buyers; it does not report hands-on testing.

Identify the finish before choosing the chemistry

Superior’s C66 technical sheet describes a non-acid cleaner and discusses factory aluminum wheels, but specifically excludes uncoated polished aluminum wheels. “Aluminum wheel” alone is therefore not a sufficient compatibility description. Ask the wheel maker or refinisher about your actual finish, especially if it has been repaired or its coating is damaged.

The exclusion above comes from the C66 sheet. The remaining entries are editorial buying precautions: they do not extend its surface approvals or certify another cleaner.

Non-acid is not the same as low-hazard

This is a handling decision as much as a cleaning decision. Include suitable dispensing, secure storage and protective supplies in your purchase plan. Follow the matching label and safety document; an online suggestion to mix a stronger solution does not establish either surface compatibility or safe handling.

Dark Fury and an iron remover solve different selection problems

Dark liquid running off a wheel is not evidence that embedded iron has been dissolved: the C66 sheet itself describes a dark-brown product. Do not buy on that visual signal alone.

A concrete alternative to investigate is CARPRO IronX, which its US distributor describes as targeting iron contamination. That same listing includes restrictions involving anodized surfaces and unknown aftermarket finishes. A specialist product still needs a finish check; changing chemistry does not remove that responsibility.

Choose by the remaining task. A compatible routine wash may be enough for ordinary dirt. Dark Fury can be considered when its documented use and your wheel maker’s instructions agree. An iron-targeting product belongs on the shortlist when iron contamination is the identified problem. No controlled same-wheel comparison was established in this research, so this guide does not award a cleaning-performance winner.

Keep wheel cleaning and tire care separate

A product marketed for both wheels and tires does not make the two surfaces interchangeable. The USTMA Tire Care and Safety Guide, page 27 recommends soap, water and a soft brush or cloth for tire cleaning and cautions that pressure washing or steam can damage tires. It directs owners to the tire manufacturer for further advice. Do not transfer a wheel-cleaning pressure or chemical procedure to the tire without checking its care instructions.

Calculate usable cost only after compatibility is settled

The C66 technical sheet gives a 4:1 dilution with water. Use that for a purchasing calculation only if the supplied concentrate’s instructions confirm it for your application. Do not apply a concentrate multiplier to a bottle labeled ready-to-use.

For occasional cleaning, count how much of a large container you will realistically use. A smaller approved product can be the better purchase even when its price per ounce is higher. For frequent work on confirmed compatible wheels, the concentrate calculation becomes more relevant. Neither conclusion requires assuming a sale price or unverified shipping total.

What should be confirmed at checkout?

1. Finish: obtain the wheel maker’s or refinisher’s permitted cleaning method.
2. Package: confirm C66, concentration, volume and current label instructions.
3. Handling: obtain the matching SDS and check that you can meet its requirements.
4. Total: compare the selected package’s delivered price with the amount you expect to use.

If those checks do not support C66, hold the purchase rather than treating a spot test or a favorable review as permission for an excluded finish.
